Nasal Congestion Remedies During Pregnancy

A normal pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks. During that time, women are limited in they medications they can take when sick. This is because many medications are known to be harmful to growing fetuses or have not been tested. If you are suffering from nasal congestion during your pregnancy, you can try some of these safe home remedies.

  1. Steam

    • Steam is a great way to open up your nasal passages and clear out your sinuses. It is also totally free and can be done in your kitchen or bathroom. To use steam in your bathroom, just turn your shower on and set the water to hot. Keep the door tclosed so that the steam builds up. Spend 15 minutes breathing in and your nose should clear up.

You can also create steam in the kitchen. Boil a pot of water and then lay a towel over your head. Lean over the pot, but don't touch it or the water because it can cause a severe burn. Spend 10-15 minutes breathing the steam in until you can tell that your congestion has cleared.

    Saline Nose Spray

    • Saline is just a form of salt water. It will not harm you or your unborn baby. All pharmacies and many grocery and department stores sell saline sprays. They are a quick, inexpensive way to get relief from nasal congestion. Open your saline nose spray and give it a few pumps until you see a fine mist. Then place it in your left nostril and hold your right nostril closed. Spray and breathe in at the same time. Then place the spray in your left nostril, keeping your right nostril closed. Spray the saline while breathing in at the same time. That's it; you're done. You can repeat this every four hours as needed.

    Neti Pot

    • The neti pot was invented in India. It is shaped to pour fluid through your nostrils and clean out your nasal passages. It is a great help if you are congested. The neti pot is available at most pharmacies or can be ordered online. Fill the neti pot with warm water and then add 1/4 tbs. of sea salt. Mix and then lean over the sink, tilting your head to one side. Start pouring the water in one nostril until it comes out the other nostril. Then lean your head to the other side and repeat using the opposite nostril. You can do this a few times a day until your congestion clears.

    Breathe Right Nasal Strips

    • When you go to bed at night use Breathe Right Nasal Strips. These strips are designed to hold your nasal passages open. That will help relieve congestion so that you can sleep at night. Take a Breathe Right Nasal Strip out of the package and remove the backing. Place the strip over your nose with the middle part going over your bridge. You will then feel the strip spring your nose open so that you can breathe. Remove the strip in the morning.
