How to Get Rid of Sciatic Pain When Pregnant
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, running across the lower back and into the legs. During the third trimester of pregnancy, the size and weight of the baby can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing pain and discomfort. While the pain while usually not be completely relieved until the birth of the baby, there are many things you can do to lessen the pain.
Things You'll Need
- Mild pain reliever
- Pregnancy yoga or Pilates workout video
- Pregnancy belt or belly band
- Heating pad
- Ice pack

Stretch often. Loose muscles will not be as susceptible to sciatic pain. Find a Pilates or yoga video that is designed for pregnancy and follow it as best you can without hurting yourself. Do not use a regular yoga or Pilates workout, because pregnant women can not safely do many of the moves, especially ones that require lying flat on your back. Ice your lower back. Use an ice pack filled with crushed ice, or use a bag of frozen peas. Use ice throughout the day to dull the pain. Heat your back after icing your back for 2 or 3 days. Sometimes switching up ice and heat will help relieve the pain. Wear a belly band or pregnancy support belt. These belts can keep keep the baby from placing pressure on the sciatic nerve. Take a mild pain reliever, such as Tylenol. Talk to your doctor about the correct dosage for you while pregnant.
