Spotting During Pregnancy

Spotting is a light amount of blood that passes through the vagina. It is not uncommon for women to have spotting during the first trimester of pregnancy, but spotting during the second and third trimester could indicate a serious problem. Any spotting or bleeding should be reported to your doctor to rule out any complications.

  1. Implantation

    • Implantation is a process where the fertilized egg attaches to the womb. Spotting can occur during the first couple of weeks after implantation. This type of spotting is common and lasts for a few hours or a few days.

    Exertion

    • Exertion through strenuous exercise, prolonged standing, climbing stairs or heavy lifting can cause spotting in some women. Physical activity should be decreased and bed rest might be recommended.

    Sexual Intercourse

    • Spotting can occur after sexual intercourse during pregnancy. This is likely due to the friction of the penis against the vaginal walls and the sensitivity of the cervix.

    Miscarriage

    • Spotting, along with cramps, low back pain, blood clots and heavier bleeding can indicate an impending miscarriage. Most miscarriages occur within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

    Mucus Plug

    • Spotting with a mucus discharge, called the mucus plug, means labor is near. The mucus plug can pass a few weeks before labor begins or at the onset.
