  1. X-Rays

    • X-rays use radiation that can cause birth defects or damage to a developing fetus. Most medical offices, except the dentist, will not perform X-rays on pregnant women. Dental offices use a cover to protect a pregnant woman's stomach from the radiation.

    Substances

    • Most alcohol and drugs are considered unsafe during pregnancy. Pregnant women should avoid alcohol and street drugs, along with cigarettes. Excessive caffeine can also be harmful and lead to lower birth-weight babies and preterm labor. Many medicines are also considered unsafe, such as aspirin, so it is essential that you consult a doctor before taking any medication, even if it is over the counter.

    Heat

    • Overheating can lead to severe damage in a developing baby's brain. Pregnant women are advised to avoid saunas, hot tubs and tanning. In extremely hot weather, it is important that expectant mothers stay hydrated and remain in the shade as much as possible.

    DEET

    • Insect repellent typically contains an ingredient called DEET. DEET is known to cause central nervous system damage in unborn infants. Pregnant women should seek natural bug repellent or remain indoors if they wish to avoid insect bites.

    Disease

    • Some diseases can cause serious side effects to unborn babies. Rubella and chicken pox should be treated immediately if contracted, as the baby can become seriously injured or experience brain damage if infected. Most women are now vaccinated against both chicken pox and rubella before pregnancy, protecting them along with their babies.

    Weight Loss

    • Weight loss is not recommended during pregnancy, regardless of a woman's pre-pregnancy weight. Losing weight can deplete the body of nutrients, along with releasing toxins that are stored in body fat. Women are advised to eat a healthy diet and partake in low-impact exercise during pregnancy to avoid gaining excessive amounts of weight.
