Planning the Timing of Your Next Pregnancy

Most of us know families with babies close in age, but have you ever wondered if there’s an ideal length of time to wait between pregnancies?

Research shows it’s best to wait at least 18 months so your body can strengthen and rebuild for the next baby.  In pregnancies closer together than this, women face a higher chance of preterm birth and low birth weight babies.

It’s also important to take good care of yourself between pregnancies, especially if your last baby was born early, had health problems like a low birth weight, or if your pregnancy resulted in miscarriage or infant death. Talk with your healthcare provider and make any lifestyle changes that could help, such as stopping or reducing smoking, eating well and being physically active to maintain a healthy weight. Focusing on being as healthy as possible between pregnancies will help minimize risks.
