How to Change Infant Formulas

There may be times during your newborn's development when you feel you need to change formulas. Your baby may be colicky, throwing up frequently, experiencing diarrhea or may not be gaining weight. Most doctors agree breast milk is best for growing children, but if you are using formula and feel you need to change the formula you are feeding your newborn, there are some important steps you must take.

      Keep a log on your infant's feeding schedule and his reactions to his formula. Write down when he eats and how he urinates or dirties his diapers. Write down if he cries and how he cries. Determine why your baby is crying. Is it a painful and panicked cry or a more annoyed cry?

      Contact your pediatrician to alert him of your concerns about your baby's reaction to his current formula. Based on your log and the answers to the questions the pediatrician may ask, you pediatrician may recommend you change your baby's formula.

      Start to change your baby's formula if your pediatrician says it is necessary. Start by adding in the new formula one scoop at a time so your baby can become acclimated to it. Take away an equal amount of scoops of the existing formula and add equal amounts of the new formula. This should take a couple of days.
