How to Prepare a Bottle of Infant Formula
Powdered infant formula is not sterile and has the potential to carry dangerous bacteria such as Cronobacter, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Proper preparation when making a bottle of formula is essential to minimize the risk of illness, especially with preterm or immunocompromised infants. Follow proper sanitation and preparation practices every time you make a bottle.
Things You'll Need
- Bottle
- Water
- Powdered formula
Instructions
Sterilize the bottle, nipple, cap and other parts of the bottle in boiling water for at least five minutes before their first use. Wash your hands and the bottle, cap, nipple and any other parts with hot, soapy water. This removes the bacteria that can build up. Take care to use a special brush to get inside the nipple or in other easily overlooked tight spaces. Bring enough water for your baby's bottle to a boil for at least one minute. According to KidsHealth, if your water is safe to drink, you can use room-temperature tap water to make the bottle. Pour the water into the bottle. Add the necessary amount of powdered formula to the bottle according to the instructions on the side of the container. Mix the formula with the water by shaking or swirling the bottle. Test the temperature of the formula by squirting a few drops on your wrist. If it feels hot to the touch, it's too hot to drink. Cool it off by running the bottle under cold tap water or placing it in a pan or other container filled with cold water.
