Single Father Grants

As a single father, you are doing the best that you can to raise your children on your own, but sometimes the financial difficulties can be overwhelming. Whether you would like to earn a college degree, need help putting food on the table or are seeking assistance for utilities and other bills, you may be eligible for grants that can help you financially, based on your specific needs.

  1. Education

    • If you wish to obtain a college degree or further your education by learning a new trade, your first course of action is to contact the school's financial aid office and explain your situation. You will be asked to fill-out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid---commonly referred to as a FAFSA form. (See Resources) By completing this form, your grant eligibility will be determined by evaluating your unique financial needs. The college or university that you are interested in attending may also have its own grants and scholarships available for single fathers, so be sure to ask.

    Living Expenses

    • If you need help paying your housing costs, utility bills, health insurance or paying for groceries, the United States Department of Health and Human Services has grants available to assist with these needs. Contact the closest office in your area to find out if you qualify for programs such as medical coverage, food stamps or welfare. (See Resources) You may also be entitled to other programs that are offered for single fathers.

    Equal Opportunity

    • In your search for government grants and financial assistance, you may be discouraged to find that the majority of those listed will be directed towards single mothers. This does not mean that you cannot take advantage of these particular grants. According to federal advocates at GovBenefits.gov, these grants are usually listed as such because single mothers make up the majority of single parents in need of financial assistance. (See References) It never hurts to apply for these grants because gender is usually not a factor when it comes to helping a single father raise a family.
