Grants for Single Parents in the United Kingdom

Single parents in the United Kingdom have some options for financial help in the form of grants. Such grants can be applied to educational or housing costs, or they can be used to help single parents obtain their first jobs or better ones. Grant programs are administered by private and public organizations, and grant amounts vary based on need.

  1. Special Support Grant

    • The Special Support Grant is given to low-income individuals who need assistance with housing and living costs while they are attending a university or other higher education school. The grants are specifically for single parents, parents who are students and students with disabilities. Students must be enrolled full-time to qualify. This grant, administered by the public Student Finance England, awards students up to 2,906 pounds per school year. Students must qualify for the Income Support and Housing Benefit Regulations' prescribed person status. Students looking to obtain this grant may also apply for the Maintenance Loan without having it count as personal income.

    Horizons Education Fund

    • The Horizons Education Fund awards grants to single parents looking to improve their employment prospects through education. Students can receive between 500 and 1,500 pounds to go toward expenses related to education and training, as long as the applicant can show that these courses will improve their job skills. Besides grants, the program also assists single parents with financial management via the Citizens Advice Bureau, and it will help with job searches via the Gingerbread organization. These are free services. This grant is open to citizens living throughout the United Kingdom. Other eligibility requirements include being in the low-income bracket and having applied for statutory funding.
