Keeping your kids dressed and protected from the elements doesn't have to cost a fortune. In fact it doesn't have to cost anything at all. With a little ingenuity, you can have a supply of free kids clothes all year long. Here's how.

  1. Organize a Clothing Swap

    • If you have friends with kids, if you attend a Mothers of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS) or Moms Offering Moms Support (MOMS) club group, or otherwise have access to a large number of mothers, you can arrange a clothing swap whereby everyone brings the clothes their child has outgrown and brings home items that fit.

    • You can look for a "free clothing" advertisement or post a "clothing needed" ad for free on your local Craigslist website. Visit craigslist.org and click on your city to get started. Be sure you're specific about the size and season of clothes you're looking for as well as whether they're for a boy or a girl.

    Call a Charitable Thrift Shop

    • Many thrift shops are run by nonprofit organizations, and sometimes if you have a dire need, you can call and ask for clothes and they will help. Offer to spend some time volunteering and you may be able to get even more.

    Freecycle for Free Kids Clothes

    • Join your local Freecycle group. Freecycle is a nonprofit, grassroots e-mail group where members give and receive items for free, thus keeping it out of landfills. There are regional, neighborhood and local groups all over the world. Keep your eyes open for people who post ads giving away free clothing that fits your child. Some groups allow you to post "wanted" ads, too. It's not necessary to explain the tragedy of your situation, just ask and receive. When you have something to give away, just send an e-mail to your Freecycle group. Visit freecycle.org to find the group closest to you.
