How to Stop Drop & Roll Fire Safety for Kids

Stop, Drop and Roll is a simple fire safety catchphrase that has been used for years to help kids remember what to do if their clothes catch on fire. Other popular techniques to help teach children what to do in the event of a fire include the "fall, crawl, wall" method, and planning a family fire meeting spot somewhere outside of their house. Children as young as preschool age can learn the Stop, Drop and Roll fire safety technique.

Things You'll Need

  • Wide open space
  • Fire safety worksheet or coloring page
  • Firefighter (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Ask a community firefighter to come to your class and help teach the kids about fire safety̵1;particularly the Stop, Drop and Roll technique. Children respond well to people in uniform, and having a firefighter talk to them will reinforce the importance of the lesson.

    • 2

Talk to the children about general fire safety. Without being too graphic, tell the kids what can happen to them if their clothing catches on fire. Let them know that the most important thing they can do if this happens is to use the Stop, Drop and Roll technique to put the fire out.

    • 3

Show the children how to stop, drop and roll. First, stop in your tracks and stay still (don't run or flail your arms and legs, as this only feeds the flames of the fire). Second, drop to the ground on your knees quickly. Third, with your arms stretched over your head, roll over and over̵1;making certain that as much of your body as possible is touching the ground.

    • 4

Once you've shown the kids how to stop, drop and roll, have them practice it on their own. Walk around the practice area and help children who are doing it incorrectly. Remind the children that they need to remember to stop, drop and roll immediately if they are on fire. Also, they should keep rolling until all of the flames have been extinguished.

Print out some educational Stop, Drop and Roll worksheets from the web. Older children will learn well from reading a worksheet passage about fire safety and then answering some questions. For kids in kindergarten or younger, try and find some Stop, Drop and Roll worksheets that involve a coloring exercise. Answer any questions the children may have while they are completing the worksheets.
