How to Plan a Mother Daughter Day

Busy lifestyles and perhaps an increasingly independent daughter make one-on-one time with your girl challenging. Setting aside a day to spend with your daughter allows you to reconnect, catch up with what's going on in her life and show her just how much you care. Convince your daughter that a day with mom can be memorable by planning events that appeal to her interests.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm about your daughter's favorite activities. Focus on those hobbies that interest her -- not you. The more you personalize the mother-daughter day, the more interested and engaged your daughter will be in the event. Make a list of potential activities, considering the cost, convenience, accessibility and time of year.

    • 2

Ask for your daughter's input on what activities from your list most appeal to her. You want to plan the day together, so take some time to sit down and evaluate what you should do during your special one-on-one time. Show her your suggestions, ask her for additional ideas and come up with a game plan for your special day.

    • 3

Incorporate a meal -- or two -- into your mother-daughter day. Choose a local restaurant that has meaning or family history, or opt for something a bit fancier than your usual haunts. During the meal, engage your daughter in light conversation, asking about school, friends and hobbies. Opening the lines of communication during the meal can encourage your daughter to open up about any issues she's having at school or with friends.

    • 4

Center your mother-daughter day around a big activity. You might go antique shopping downtown, take your daughter to a concert by her favorite performer or sign up for a cooking class to take with your aspiring chef. Choose an activity that allows you and your daughter to interact and enjoy each other -- and the activity -- together. Avoid a dark movie theater, for example, which doesn't bring with it much one-on-one interaction.

    • 5

Get creative as you schedule your mother-daughter day. Lunch and shopping might be your go-to activity when it comes to your daughter, but opt for something a bit more out of the ordinary for your special day. Surprise her with an extravagant dessert at dinner, challenge your athlete to a one-on-one basketball match or teach her how to cook her favorite meal. These intimate moments will be memorable for both of you for years to come.
