When Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, posed for a family photo with her new baby and husband, she made waves for wearing an inexpensive maternity dress. After the picture was published, the dress sold out in hours. You don't have to copy Middleton's style to find affordable maternity clothing, though. It takes a bit more effort to find maternity options than standard clothing, but a number of outlets offer cheap clothing to fit both your bump and your budget.

      Hold a clothing swap with friends who have already had children and with friends who aren't mothers yet. Your post-baby friends can get some regular clothing while you and other pregnant buddies can find maternity wear for free. If you have friends who are a size or two larger than you, you might be able to wear some standard pieces from their closet during the first part of your pregnancy, too.

      Check out local consignment shops or thrift stores for gently used maternity clothes. Some consignment stores offer maternity clothing exclusively. You won't pay retail for secondhand garments and might be able to find some great, high quality pieces for a song. Inspect the clothes before you buy for stains or tears, and ask about the store's return policy, in case there's an issue with the clothing after purchase.

      Shop online at discount, fast fashion retailers. A number of inexpensive clothing stores, such as Old Navy and H&M, offer a wider selection of maternity clothing online than they do in stores. If you aren't sure what size you'll be in maternity clothes, order with caution. Choose a store that offers both free shipping and free returns, so that you won't have to pay to return an item that doesn't fit.

      Buy pieces over the course of your pregnancy to avoid wasting money. Don't try to get all your maternity clothes in one fell swoop at the end of the first trimester. Your body might change in ways that are unexpected and a dress you bought at the three month mark, thinking it would fit you at eight months, might not work when the time comes.
