How to Size Clothing for a Child
As your child is growing by leaps and bounds, it can be tough trying to determine what size clothes you need to buy for him. Whether you shop in store or online, you're going to need to know what size will fit him best before you purchase something. This applies to shopping for clothes he can wear now, clothing to be saved for the upcoming season or great deals you find that your child can wear the following year.
Things You'll Need
- Cloth tape
- Pen and paper
Instructions
Weigh your child at home with your home scale and jot down her weight. This helps determine clothing size for babies through size 7 in children's wear. Instruct your child to stand with her back straight against a wall. Measure her height from the soles of her feet to the top of her head and write this down as well. Place the cloth measuring tape around your child's chest, just under her arms, to see what her measurement there is. Measure the length of your child's arms, from the top of her shoulder, down to her elbow and all the way to her wrist. Position one end of the cloth tape at your child's crotch and bring it up to her neckline to see how long her torso is. Measure around your child's waist, resting the measuring tape just a bit loose around her natural waistline. Place the cloth tape around your child's buttocks and hips to get a hip measurement. Use the measurements you've taken to determine which size your child is currently wearing by taking a look at a children's clothing size chart, such as the ones at SizeGuide.net and the website Children's Size Chart. Determine your baby's size by her height and weight. If your baby weighs 25 pounds and is 30 inches long, for example, she'd wear a size 12 to 18 months in baby clothes. If your child was 43 inches tall and weighed around 39 pounds, she'd wear a size 4 in kids. Determine your older kid's clothing size with her measurements. Take your child shopping with you, so that she can try on some clothing items to see what size fits her best. Save your receipts if you shop without your child, so that you can return or exchange items that don't fit her.
