Are there Negative Effects of Youth Staying Indoors

"Play is the work of children," stated Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg in his testimony to the Natural Resources Subcommittees on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans and National Parks, Forests and Public Lands. Ginsburg, representing the American Academy of Pediatrics, affirmed the conventional medical wisdom that suggests children and youth need regular physical activity for their physical, emotional and psychological development. The best place for children to participate in physical activity is outside, yet the average American child spends less than 30 minutes a day outdoors. That same child often spends hours per day using a phone, sitting at a computer or video game console and watching television. The disconnect from nature could have serious risks for America's young people.

  1. Couch Potato Problems

    • Obesity rates doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents over the last two decades of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st. This phenomenon is due to a "caloric imbalance" -- consuming more calories than are expended -- according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In years past, a child might have spent all day outdoors riding his bicycle or playing with friends then come home to a hearty dinner. Today's average child spends most of his day in sedentary occupations inside, but still eats as if he were active. The risks of obesity include cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, diabetes and many other physical and psychological problems.

    Stressing Busting

    • Just like adults, children have stresses. They may seem minor -- a tenuous friendship or a bad test grade -- but over time, the stresses build up. Without the ability to release tension, children may become moody, withdrawn or aggressive. Unstructured play can go a long way in helping a child relax and feel happy. Playtime outside can expand brain development, improve peer relationships and self-discipline. If your child is showing significant symptoms of stress, contact your health care provider.

    Lack of Imagination

    • Television and computers spoon-feed your child fantasy and reality. There is no need for him to "make-believe" when he can passively watch a story unfold. Though there are plenty of ways for a child to use his imagination inside, the great outdoors offers ample opportunity for your child to expand his imagination and put his creative talents to good use. While it may seem inconsequential, the physical and mental challenge of exploring the natural world is associated with developmental advancement, according to Ginsburg. A child who stays indoors misses out on some critical opportunities for problem-solving and creative thinking.

    Finding Solutions

    • There are several impediments to outdoor play, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The creation of safe, natural spaces is something that may only happen with the help of local government, but there are other factors you can change. The AAP notes that many parents erroneously believe that extracurricular activities, even those outside, are more important than unstructured playtime. If you find yourself ferrying your child from one event to the next, consider cutting out activities. Take your child to the park and let him play for a while instead.

    • Raising a daughter is a delight, a treasure full of surprise and potential. Daughters are sweet, curious and complex. Just being around a daughter keeps a parent young at heart and inspired. Theres excitement in the house. Theres nothing as important
    • As a family therapist, I often ask children from ages 5 to 18: What is a meaningful time that youve had with your mom or dad or your family? Over the years I have been impressed by the wisdom in their answers. Even if we are trying to cut corners on
    • Having a baby requires a large amount of gear. If you have limited space and are out of room for a dresser, its time to get creative. Baby clothes are tiny, so they wont take up a ton of space, but you have to keep them somewhere. Instead of going al
