How to De-Tangle a Child's Matted Hair

Improper hair care, sleeping, active play and having naturally coarse hair can all contribute to the knotting and matting of your child's hair. De-tangling mats in your child's hair can be painful and frustrating, but there are some simple tricks you can use to help make the process easier.

Things You'll Need

  • De-tangling shampoo or conditioner
  • Leave-in de-tangling conditioner
  • Wide-tooth comb

Instructions

    • 1

Wet and lather your child's hair using a de-tangling shampoo or conditioner that is developed specifically for children. Children's shampoos contain milder ingredients, and typically do not burn if they get in eyes.

    • 2

Use a wide-tooth comb to comb through your child's hair prior to rinsing out the de-tangling shampoo or conditioner. Take extra care when combing through mats, using small, gentle strokes of the comb to reduce pain. Thoroughly rinse shampoo or conditioner from your child's hair.

    • 3

Blot your child's hair with a towel until it is no longer dripping with water. Spray a leave-in children's de-tangling conditioner onto the hair before it dries. Comb through the hair, again taking special care when combing through tough mats.

Prevent future mats by gathering your child's hair into a ponytail at bedtime. This will make the hair easier to comb through the following morning.
