How to Tuck a Child in at Night
Tucking your child into bed is usually the least phase of the bedtime routine, but not all kids stay tucked quietly into bed. The steps leading up to the tucking-in process affect how likely your child is to drift off to sleep. She may get out of bed if she feels uncomfortable, scared or too wound up to sleep. Your child's safety is also a concern, as you tuck her into bed. Creating a soothing, and safe tucking-in routine can help reduce sleep problems for your child.
Instructions
Go through your regular nighttime routine, keeping the idea of maintaining calm uppermost in your mind. Common bedtime procedures include brushing teeth, putting on pajamas, bathing, reading books, singing songs and cuddling with your little one. Keep the routine the same each night, so that he knows what to expect. Check the climate of the bedroom to make sure it is comfortable. Kids usually prefer a slightly cool and dark room with little noise. Turn on any background noise, such as quiet music or a white noise machine, if your child needs it. Adjust the fitted sheet on the bed if it shifted during the previous night. Pull the sheet tight and snug at the corners for a smooth surface. Fluff her pillow. Smooth out the blankets on the bed so they aren't bunched or crooked. Help your little one climb into bed if she isn't already there. She should still be awake but starting to get sleepy so she can easily fall asleep. Pull the blankets up over your child. Tuck the blankets around her body if she likes a snug feeling. Leave the blankets loosely on top of her if she prefers. Check her bed and surrounding area for potential dangers, such as dangling curtain cords, extension cords or items on a nearby shelf or nightstand that might fall. Remove those dangers to keep your little one tucked into bed safely. Give your good-night kisses and hugs. Hand her any security items, such as a favorite stuffed animal or blanket, that help her feel safe at night. Tell her good night before you exit the room. Tuck your child back into bed if she gets up. Remind her that you already tucked her in for the night and she needs to stay put unless there is an emergency or she needs to use the bathroom. Continue tucking her back in until she remains in her bed and falls asleep.
