How to Get Rid of Diaper Odor Naturally

You might not have imagined that such an adorable little munchkin could create such a repugnant odor -- until the scent of dirty diapers begins to permeate your home. But you don̵7;t have to resign yourself to clothespin nose covers just yet. Use a variety of natural solutions to eliminate the diaper odor and prevent it from returning.

Things You'll Need

  • Box or circulating fans
  • Lemon or lime
  • Shallow dish
  • Eucalyptus or mint oil
  • Baking soda
  • Cloves
  • White vinegar
  • Dryer sheet

Instructions

    • 1

Open the windows to air out the odor when the weather makes it possible. Arrange small box or circulating fans at opposite ends of the home to blow fresh air inward through one window and blow stale air out the other.

    • 2

Slice a lemon or lime in half and place it cut side up on a small plate or shallow dish in the offending room. These fruits will draw in the diaper odor -- and leave the room smelling better.

    • 3

Neutralize the air with eucalyptus or mint oils. Pour a little in a shallow dish and place it out of the way on a dresser or counter. The aroma from the oil will fill the room, first masking the diaper odor and then neutralizing it in the air. Sandalwood and cinnamon help to eliminate odors, too, but these are very musky odors that can overwhelm the senses easily.

Sprinkle a combination of eight parts baking soda to one part cloves on the carpet if you're worried the diaper odor is penetrating the flooring. Allow the deodorizer to sit for five minutes and then vacuum it up thoroughly.

    • 5

Eliminate odor in cloth diapers with baking soda. If you notice a less-than-springtime fresh odor even after you've washed the diapers, add half-cup of baking soda to your next wash cycle. Rinse the diapers thoroughly to ensure no residue is left behind. Add half-cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle to help break down uric acid, eliminate odor and maintain a healthy pH balance in the cloth that will rest against your baby̵7;s skin.

Sprinkle baking soda into the diaper pail after adding every new dirty diaper. If you're using disposable diapers, tie up each diaper in a disposable bag filled with a little baking soda, too. Allow only a few diapers to pile up before emptying the pail. Clean and sanitize the pail with vinegar every time you empty it. Before putting a fresh bag in the pail, place a dryer sheet on the bottom to help eliminate odors.
