How to Prepare for a Daughter's Dance Recital

Recitals are an opportunity for young dancers to showcase their talent after long hours of hard work and practice. Preparing for a recital can be a bit nerve-wracking, however. In addition to the flurry of costume fittings and rehearsals, it's important to attend to your daughter's emotions. She probably feels nervous and anxious, so give her plenty of positive praise and attention.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your daughter to practice. Even the most gifted dancers have to work hard to learn their routines. Make sure your daughter attends every practice and rehearsal. Encourage her to run through her routine at home, too.

    • 2

Host a home performance. Ask your child's teacher for a CD of the recital music. Invite grandparents, aunt, uncles, cousins and friends to come over for a mini recital. Having the opportunity to run through her numbers in front of friendly faces may help your daughter to shake pre-performance jitters.

    • 3

Talk to the teacher. Discuss costume, hair and makeup details in the weeks prior to the recital so you won't be caught off guard. Make sure your daughter's costume fits and her dance shoes are broken in so her feet won't blister.

    • 4

Make sure your daughter is physically prepared. Dance recitals can be very strenuous. It's important that your daughter is well-fed and rested in order to perform her best.

    • 5

Be ready for anything. Get to the venue at least an hour before the recital. Help your child change into her costume and check her stockings for runs and tears. Carry extra hair accessories, stockings and a stain stick in case of accident.

    • 6

Give plenty of encouragement. Assure your daughter that no matter what happens, you are very proud of her hard work and accomplishment. After the performance, offer praise, not criticism, and surprise her with a bouquet of flowers.
