How to Write a Father of the Bride Toast

An important part of a wedding is the father-of-the-bride's toast. This is the toast where the groom and his family are formally welcomed into your family, some kind words are said about the bride, and the festivities begin.

These toasts are either first, to open the toast-making portion of the wedding, or last, to begin the informal festivities. They are seldom, if ever, in the middle, because the main purpose of the father-of-the-bride toast is to usher in a part of the wedding.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a few words to get everyone's attention and to introduce yourself. While you are the father of the bride, there are going to be people who don't know who you are, particularly if it is a large wedding.

    • 2

Write a few words welcoming the groom and his family into your family. These should be short and pithy; lay the emotion on later.

    • 3

Tell a few stories about the bride. Don't make them too embarrassing, but make sure they are personal, highlighting the connection between you and her as a father and daughter. Tell maybe three or five stories, depending on how long they are.

    • 4

Make a few comments about how beautiful the bride looks. Be specific, so that everyone knows you've taken the time to pay attention to your daughter on her wedding day.

    • 5

Give some advice to the bride and groom, modeled on your marriage.

    • 6

Conclude the speech by wishing them a happy marriage and raising your glass.
