How to Plan a Preschool Curriculum

Create a preschool curriculum that addresses all of the learning points and areas that children need to develop and grow! For use by parents and child care providers alike.

Things You'll Need

  • paper
  • pen or pencil
  • printer
  • computer to access internet

Instructions

    • 1

Gather blank paper, something to write with and access early learning standards on the computer at http://www.pde.state.pa.us/early_childhood/cwp/view.asp?Q=101706.

    • 2

Divide the paper into several sections and write headers by section depending on your goals and time restrictions. For example, circle time, centers, guided play, large motor, creative arts and fine motor are good starting places. These headers can represent goals for a day, a week, a month or even a year. This is the framework for the curriculum planning.

    • 3

Using the early learning standards, identify where the child(ren) currently is in their development and identify the next step. There are suggestions for how to expand that knowledge contained in the early learning standards download. Try to make activities that will challenge the child to learn and combine a few standards into one.

    • 4

Use books as stepping stones between curriculum areas. For example, books can connect science and math concepts to literacy and communication depending on how it is implemented. Reading The Three Little Pigs is a great starting point with literacy but take it a step further and add a science lesson about the strength of bricks versus hay and you have a lesson!

    • 5

Make notes of activities under the headers to be sure to address each child's needs, then implement them in the time frame you are looking to address. Take follow up notes in a notepad or journal about how each activity went and what was both positive and negative about it. Use this information in further planning and allow it to mold your plans to the child's specific needs.
