Kansas Child Seatbelt Laws
Kansas state child seatbelt laws are based on the child's current age and weight. Exceptions are made for the age requirement when the child's weight or height exceeds that of other children the same age. Kansas law allows children to sit in the front or the back seat as long as they are properly secured in a child safety seat, booster seat or seat belt. A $60 fine is imposed for a first-time offense for each child who is not properly seated in the vehicle, as of 2010.

Children Under 3
-
Children under 3-years-old must be in child safety seats. All children under 3-years-old, regardless of their weight or height, must be secured in a child safety seat in either the front of back seat. The child safety seat must be properly secured in the passenger seat as specified by the car seat manufacturer.
Children 4 to 7
-
Children aged 4 to 7 must be in a safety seat or booster seat. Children who are between the ages of 4 and 7-years-old, weighing less than 80 pounds and standing less than 57 inches tall, must ride in either a child safety seat or a booster seat. Children in this age group who weigh more than 80 pounds and are more than 57 inches tall, may ride without a booster seat in an adult seat belt.
Children 8 to 13
-
Children aged 8 to 13 are allowed to ride using an adult seat belt. Children between the ages of 8 and 13 do not need a booster seat, and are permitted to ride in either the front or back seat in a properly fastened seat belt. There are no weight and height requirements once the child reaches 8-years-old.
Children Over 14
-
Teenagers are required to wear a seat belt. The same rules apply for children between the ages of 14 and 17 regarding seat belt use. A fine of $60 can be imposed for all children under the age of 17 who are not properly secured in their seat. For passengers 18-years-old and over, the fine is reduced to $10 dollars when a seat belt is not worn in the front seat of a vehicle.
