Summer Activities for Children in Sauble Beach, Ontario

With 11 kilometers of Blue Flag beach, Sauble Beach is a place to take the kids for some swimming and sandcastle building. A couple of hours away from Toronto by car, Sauble Beach offers an unhurried cottage experience while still being close to Canada's largest city. If your kids aren't the kind to bask in the sun for hours, there's still lots to do and see in the area.

  1. Exploring Nature

    • Sauble Beach is in the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. You can find everything from spelunking in Greig's Caves or Bruce Caves to hidden grottos and amazing views in the national parks. Fathom Five National Marine Park features pristine waters and rugged islands. The site has 22 shipwrecks and many historic light stations so there's lots to explore above the waves and below. Bruce Peninsula National Park is in the heart of the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. It showcases stunning rugged cliffs, 1,000-year-old cedar trees and crystal clear waters.

    Moving Around Outside

    • Get your family moving by hitting one of the many hiking trails in the area. The Bruce Trail is a 20-minute drive from Sauble Beach. If your kids are tired of digging up the beach to make sandcastles, go treasure hunting instead. You can rent a metal detector from the Golden Eagle Giftshop. Take your treasure hunt even farther afield. A total of 450 official geocache sites are in Bruce County, so take a day to find as many as your explorers can handle. Remember to bring prizes to put in the geocache sites to replace what you take.

    Family Activities

    • More than 50 family-friendly games are at Giggles Arcade. On rainy days, you won't even have to leave for food because a sub shop is on-site. If your kids want to create their own souvenirs, take them to a "fun shop" at Glass in Motion. The family-oriented workshops let you create your own fused-glass pendant, sun catcher or wind chimes. Fun shops are usually held three times a day during the summer and it's a good idea to reserve a spot. If the kids need to get moving, you can play some rounds of mini golf at most of the local golf courses.

    Annual Events

    • Sandfest, which runs for a week at the beginning of August, shows your kids how the pros build. Aside from sandy inspiration, you'll find live music, volleyball competitions, a talent show, a classic car show and more. If your kids are night owls, consider taking in Family Movie Night, a free event on the lawn beside Giggle Arcade. The selection can include classics and recent releases that haven't made it to DVD yet. Bring blankets and snacks, and be prepared to carry younger viewers to the car at the end of the night. The Sauble Beach Canada Day celebration, on and around July 1, offers picnicking and family-friendly activities, along with a night sky bursting with fireworks over the water.
