How to Pack a Preschooler's Bag for an Airplane Trip
You're getting ready for a family trip to the beach or a distant theme park and your preschooler is worried about what to take. You know what the must-have items are, based on where you are going, what activities you'll be doing, and your child's age and interests, and you'll pack the family luggage accordingly. Let him get involved by helping you pack his carry-on bag, then add a new toy or two that will come as welcome surprises on the plane.

Instructions
Select a colorful, kid-friendly backpack or small wheeled bag that your preschooler can carry himself for at least part of the trip. Make a list of the items your child will need while traveling and for the first day after arriving at your destination, in case your luggage gets delayed en route. Pack your child's bag yourself if you're pressed for time. But if your schedule permits, let your child participate -- she'll feel like she's helping and can learn about making choices. Don't give her free rein to include anything she wants; tell her there is only a little room on the airplane for each person to bring a small carry-on and that there are also rules about what you can take on a plane, so she understands why she can't take her tricycle or the goldfish. Give her limited choices, such as picking one of two small stuffed animals or choosing between the red hat and the blue one. Include small toys, activities or books to keep your preschooler occupied and entertained on your trip, such as crayons and coloring books or a small deck of cards. If your little one enjoys music, movies or electronic games, include his hand-held game or music player, along with earphones and extra batteries. If your child is interested in pictures, add an inexpensive disposable camera he can use to document his airplane trip. Include a picture book about your destination that you can read together on the plane to increase his anticipation about the trip. Pack some easy-to-eat snacks in resealable plastic bags for your preschooler to enjoy while traveling. This allows you to pick healthy items you know your child will eat and saves you from having to spend money on often expensive airport food or candy. If your child uses a sippy cup, include one in the bag, since few airlines offer these on flights. Throw in a small, resealable package of wet wipes for the inevitable spills or sticky hands. Put the items your child is least likely to need ready access to, such as a change of clothes, at the bottom of the bag. Add in the other items to maximize space, then finish up your packing by putting a favorite toy, a snack and maybe a new activity on top. Include her favorite small blanket or a sweater in case she gets cold on the plane or while waiting at the airport.
