How to Choose a Quality Kindergarten Program for a Child

It seems like only yesterday you were guiding your little one through her first steps. Now, she's not so little, and it's time to start school. A high quality kindergarten will lay the foundations for literacy and math skills. Your child will also learn to work and play with other children and adults. While finding the right kindergarten requires research, it will pay off when you see your child learning more each day and making new friends.

      Consult a school directory for information on kindergarten programs in your chosen area. School directories with reviews are available at School Digger or Great Schools. Directories are also available on these websites for your local school district.

      Contact the schools that seem to meet your requirements. Ask if an open house or similar event is planned for families of prospective kindergarteners. If not, make arrangements for an individual visit.

      Visit each school at least once with your child. Ask about the daily routine and school policies. Look at any displayed work, and if school is in session, ask to briefly observe a kindergarten teacher with a class.

      Discuss the prospective kindergarten programs with your child. Respond positively to your child's questions and concerns. Choose the kindergarten program that satisfies both of you best.
