How to Change a Child's Bicycle Tire
How you change your child's bicycle tire will depend somewhat on the age of the bike. Regardless, changing a child’s bicycle tire is relatively simple if you have the necessary tools and some patience. If your child is old enough,it would be a good idea to have her assist you and learn how to do the work herself. If she uses her bicycle regularly, chances are this won’t be her last flat tire, and repairing a bicycle tire is something older children can easily learn.
Things You'll Need
- New tire
- Tire pump
- Adjustable wrench
- Tire irons (optional)
Instructions
Flip the quick-release levers on each side of the axle and pull the wheel free of the bicycle. Quick-release levers are normally found on newer bicycles. If your child's bicycle is an older model you may have to loosen axle nuts that hold the wheel to the bike. Use your adjustable wrench for removing the axle nuts. Open the valve on the bicycle tire to deflate it. Push the edge of the tire away from the wheel rim, using your thumbs. Work your way all the way around one side of the tire, and then work your way around the other side of the tire. Slide your fingers under the edge of the tire and pull one side from the rim. Remove the deflated tire and tube from the wheel. Slip the edge of the new tire around the wheel's rim. Place the tube inside the tire, making sure that the tube valve is lined up with the valve hole in the rim. Push the tube into the tire. Push the edge of the tire onto the rim of the wheel. Use the tire iron to force the edge of the tire over the rim edge if necessary. Inflate the tire. Place the wheel back on the bicycle, flipping the quick-release levers back in place or replacing and tightening down the axle nuts.
