Themes for Children's Camps

Space Theme

• A space camp theme can attract children interested in astronomy and the exploration of space. It can also appeal to fans of science fiction. Making your summer camp space themed is simple. Your meals should have space related names, such as ̶0;Mars Burgers̶1; and ̶0;Alpha Centauri Spaghetti.̶1; Choose activities that reflect a space theme. For example, swimming can be turned into space related games by having the children explore underwater for ̶0;planets̶1; and ̶0;aliens̶1; or rocks and animals they pretend are planets or aliens. Other activities can include ̶0;exploring galaxies" or hiking. Name different objects in the woods after objects in space, such as planets or stars. "Space dances" should use electronic, spacey sounding music. Use space artwork, like planets and stars to decorate your buildings.

Sport Camp

• Another theme that appeals to many children is a sports summer camp. The games and activities of this camp should focus on sports events and fitness. For example, your camp can have regular baseball games. You can also have track meets, swimming contests, rowing events and even unusual sports. Introduce kids to games they may not have played, like cricket. The food at a sports camp should be healthy and include lots of protein for energy. Decorate the halls with pictures of sports stars, sporting events as well as quotes from motivational speeches of famous sport stars.

Study Camp

• Not all children will be interested in playing sports. Some children are more interested in studying, learning and expanding their knowledge. A study summer camp is perfect for children who want to focus on improving their mind. Make many different types of books and activities available for your students. For example, a history cabin should focus on presenting different aspects of history in a fun and exciting manner. Let the kids create their own focus but guide them if they get disinterested or lost. However, you should try to integrate physical activities into the learning. For example, take a 5-mile hike to gather insects for a bug collection.

Adventure Theme

• Children love adventure movies and comic books because they present an exciting alternative to the real world. An adventure themed summer camp may make them feel like they spent their summer in a wild adventure. Name your cabins after superheroes or adventure movies such as ̶0;Superman Cabin̶1; or ̶0;Indiana Jones Cabin.̶1; Each cabin should be decorated to reflect the theme picked for the cabin. The counselors in charge of the cabin should act like the hero and try to get the children excited for each day̵7;s activities. Present craft activities as if they were making tools for their superhero, such as communicators made out of craft sticks. Each day should culminate in an encouraging, heroic speech from the camp leader to keep the children excited.
