Activities for Children Recovering From Pneumonia

Not only does contracting pneumonia do a number on a child̵7;s body, having to keep activities low-key during recovery can be a real drag. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, your child should stick to activities that don̵7;t require a lot of energy until he is fully recovered from pneumonia and gone through any treatment prescribed by his doctor. Since the recovery time can take anywhere from a couple days to four weeks, depending on the type of pneumonia he picked up, you̵7;ll need to find plenty of activities to keep your child busy and entertained.

  1. Reading

    • Even if your child wasn̵7;t a big reader before, now is the perfect time to advocate for cracking open some books. Introduce him to a new book series he can get hooked on during his recovery. To spark some interest in a reluctant reader, offer him comic books or specialized magazines, such as ones about animals, toys, electronics or cars. Leave a stack within his reach so he has no excuse why he didn't pick one up at some point during the day. If your child is young and hasn't learned to read yet, provide simple picture books and read books aloud to him when you can, pointing to pictures as you go.

    Games

    • Your sick little guy can still play some games while he̵7;s propped up in bed. Teach him some card games he can play solo, like solitaire, or with another opponent when he has visitors, such as hearts, war or rummy. Creating card towers can keep him busy during those long hours. Board games, puzzles and mind teasers can act as boredom-busters.

    Word and Number Games

    • To keep his brain fresh and active, bust out some word and number games. Books filled with word finds, silly word fill-in-the-blank games and crossword puzzles satisfy this need. Playing several games of hangman with a visitor can be fun. Sudoku number games will get his wheels turning and help him keep his math skills up to speed.

    Television

    • Since your child may be cooped up in the house for a while, television may be unavoidable. Instead of giving him free rein on flipping through the channels all day long, bring out an educational series of DVDs on animals, ocean life, ancient people, famous places or space and planets. You may want to stress that he should alternate between episodes with other time-fillers.
