How to Prepare Children for School Violence
Preparing children for school violence is very important. The headlines are sadly full of instances of school violence. Although it may not be a favorite choice of topic among parents, teachers and children, preparing children to react appropriately in a violent situation can save lives.
Instructions
Make the child aware of school violence and what can happen. Explain various incidents in the past and what could have been done to prevent the violence, if anything. Make the child aware of what is going on in today's society. Discuss with the child a plan of action in case of school violence. This may be a shooting, another child or outsider becoming harmful or even gang related incidences. Demonstrate to the child various ways they can keep themselves safe in case of violence. This may be hiding underneath a desk or table, locking doors and windows or even calling 911 from a nearby phone or cell phone. Ask the local police force to come and talk with the children at the school regarding violence. These experts can explain the importance of what has happened in the past, what is being done to prevent it and what the child can do to be better prepared. Perform safety drills with the child and their class. Act out certain events that may occur if violence were to erupt in their own school. Perhaps offer videos for them to watch, such as re-enactments of past incidents. Answer any questions the child may have regarding the video and school violence. Allow the child to make their own suggestions regarding a safety plan. Perhaps they may have a better idea and can think of something that has not already been thought of or discussed. Consider the children's feelings, emotions and concerns regarding school violence. Perhaps offer drawing or writing exercises to the children and ask that they write or draw out their thoughts. Sometimes this may help focus on the area they are most concerned about.
