How to Childproof Blind Cords

Window blinds can pose a significant strangulation risk for children if the cords do not have the correct configuration. While it̵7;s important to ensure that the pull cords of blinds hang separately without forming a loop, another dangerous situation also exists with window blinds. The inner cords that hold the blind slats together and enable you to raise and lower them can also form a lethal loop. Order a free retrofit kit from the Window Covering Safety Council for your window blinds. Kits contain tiny clips that will prevent the cords from moving if your child pulls them.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your window blinds at the height you want them to stay. Once you install the cord stops, you will effectively lock your blinds and prevent them from moving up or down. One you set the blinds, you can still open and close them by using the wand to open and close the slats.

    • 2

Create a loop in one of the pull cords near the top head rail of the blinds.

    • 3

Insert a cord stop onto the loop of the pull cord and slide the cord stop along the loop. Position the cord stop at the base of the loop.

    • 4

Grasp the end of one of the pull cords and insert it through the loop you created in this cord. Pull the end of the pull cord slowly to position the cord stop approximately 1 to 2 inches under the head rail. Once you have the cord stop at the proper position, pull the cord taut to create a knot around the cord stop.

    • 5

Repeat the same process with the other pull cord and another cord stop.
