Safe Phones for Kids

Safe phones for kids have become a priority for many parents. Parents want to keep their children safe from the inappropriate activities on the Internet and used on messages but still able to have a line of communication with them. As of August 2010, several companies offer phones for kids that are parent controlled and geared toward children as young as 5.

  1. Firefly glowPhone

    • The glowPhone comes in black or pink, has a full color screen and features games. The child is also able to customize the ring tone and wallpaper by selecting the one he wants from the pre-downloaded options. Up to 50 numbers can be stored on the phone with a parent password only. The pre-selected numbers chosen by the parents are the only incoming and outgoing numbers allowed. The glowPhone has five buttons: "Mom" and "Dad" buttons for quick dialing, "Talk," "End," and a round arrow button to scroll up and down and side to side.

    LG Migo

    • The Migo is offered only through Verizon Wireless. It is a small green phone and features a speakerphone. The phone has seven buttons: an emergency button programmed to call 911, "Talk," "End," and four buttons for numbers pre-programmed by parents. Incoming calls cannot be restricted. The Migo is a simple phone for kids. It is not customizable and the child is limited to calling four numbers that have been programmed by their parents.

    Enfora Tic Talk

    • The Tic Talk was made for Leapfrog by Enfora. An oval-shaped phone, similar to a stopwatch. It has a clip near the top of the phone, making it easy to clip onto a pant loop, backpack or lanyard. The Tic Talk allows parents to program up to 22 numbers for incoming and outgoing calls. Parents are also able to customize the times their child is allowed to receive and make phone calls. Leapfrog preloaded many educational games such as math, spelling, trivia and Hangman. The phone is able to receive text messages but the child is only allowed to respond using preloaded answers. Kids are able to customize the ring tone from the pre-downloaded tones on the phone. The Tic Talk has two side buttons and a large rocker wheel located on the front of the phone.

    Cricket A100

    • The A100 is only offered through Cricket wireless. The phone is a black and silver bar-style phone, very sleek and more appropriate for an older child. The phone is text-message capable, but it cannot receive or send picture messages. Kids are able to customize and download many features on the phone, such as ring tones, wallpapers and games.
