How to Design Your Own Play Money
Play money can be an important tool in teaching children how to use currency, but can also become a fun activity in of itself. Designing play money can be done in a number of ways, but bringing kids in on the design process will help to make it fun and rewarding. With a few common art supplies, you will be conducting imaginary transactions in no time.
Things You'll Need
- Sketch paper
- Colored pencils
- Old photographs
- Color copier
Instructions
Work with your child to determine the denominations of your bills. You can stick with traditional values of one, five, ten and so on, or go with completely ridiculous numbers. If you are going to use the money as a learning tool, it may be best to stick to real world values. Decide on the size of the bills. You can make all of the bills the same dimensions, or vary the paper sizes for different denominations. Draw the outline of a bill using a ruler and a pencil. Once the outline is completed, go over it in pen to protect it from possible erasure. Allow your child to design the interior of the bill including the featured numbers and other artwork. For an added touch of fun, cut out a picture of your child and let it be the face on the bill. Place the completed bills on a color copier to print the money you designed.
