How to Endorse a UTMA Check

A UTMA, or Uniform Transfer to Minors Account, is a custodial savings account for minors. The account designates a person as the custodian for the benefit of the minor. The minor beneficiary is normally under 18 or 21 years of age and the UTMA check payee is the name of the custodian. Therefore, the custodian has to endorse the check to cash or deposit it.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the UTMA check to your bank and turn the check so the back side is face up.

    • 2

Locate the top line with the "X" on the left side. Sign your name on the line exactly as it appears on the front.

    • 3

Write "For Deposit Only" on the line under your signature, if you want to deposit the check. To cash it, present the check to the bank teller along with a valid form of identification such as a military or state identification card or driver's license. Some banks require an additional form of identification such as a credit card.
