Preschool Activities With Peanut Butter & Jelly
Effective learning activities for preschoolers include those that involve hands-on and listening skills. Using a theme of peanut butter and jelly, it's possible to integrate a variety of activities incorporating these skills. Check out from the library a copy of ̶0;Peanut Butter and Jelly: A Play Rhyme Book̶1; with its matching CD. Read the book to the children several times and then read it leaving out key words that they can shout out. Give them an opportunity to sing along with the CD.
Sandwich Game

Place children in groups and give each group a bag containing 4̶1; square white poster board bread ̶0;slices,̶1; 3̶1; circles of tan ̶0;peanut butter̶1; and 3̶1; circles of ̶0;grape jelly.̶1; Have kids pass the bag around, pulling out one shape at a time. The first player to draw a complete sandwich (two slices of bread, peanut butter and jelly) is the winner.

Show children peanuts in their shells and talk about how they grow. Let the children shell the peanuts. Using a recipe such as the one listed in the resources below, make peanut butter in a food processor. Give each child a few grapes; talk about how they are grown. Show children a jar of grape jelly and ask them to brainstorm with you ideas about how grapes are made into jelly.
Peanut Butter and Jelly Candy

Give children ¼ cup of peanut butter, ¼ cup honey, and ½ cup powdered milk. After they have thoroughly mixed the ingredients together (some of them may want to use their clean hands for the job), let them roll the mixture into balls. Show them how to make an indentation in the top of the peanut butter balls with the end of a spoon and fill it with a tiny dollop of jelly. These should be kept in the refrigerator for an hour before eating.
Jelly Tasting

Place a teaspoon of strawberry jelly in a paper bathroom cup (one for each child). Give kids the opportunity to taste the jelly and guess what kind it is. Then repeat the activity with other familiar flavors, like strawberry, and some children might not have tried before like mint or orange marmalade.
