How to Stop the Fights Over TV vs. Homework

Have you noticed there seems to be a battle between your kids, homework, TV and you? In order to ease the pain and result in a win-win for both sides try these steps.

      Have a discussion at the beginning of the school year.

      Ask each child how they propose to manage homework and provide sufficient time for their favorite program.

      If you don't agree with all their suggestions provide a counter offer. Your goal is to make them feel empowered and responsible.

      The discussion should also include the consequences if they fail to meet their commitments. The loss of TV privileges, etc. and provide you an opportunity to review all homework assignments.

      Beware of the 'we didn't have any homework today' syndrome. Contact their teachers regarding homework assignments and methods. For example teachers will allow the kids to work on their homework assignments in class but will not accept them until the next day; providing the parents an opportunity to review.

      If no homework is assigned this is your opportunity to assign homework such as 30 minutes to read their favorite book. Set expectations there will always be homework.

      If all sides have reached a favorable comprise, draw up a contract which outlines the terms and conditions. Have each person sign and display copies in their bedrooms and kitchen.
