Many organizations in and around New Jersey offer intervention for youth who need some straightening out. The teenage years in particular can be a difficult time, and for families who struggle with a teen who is defiant or out of control, a temporary residential program can be a helpful solution.

Students will get in step at military school. New York Military Academy (NYMA) is a military boarding school that emphasizes building character and discipline. The school accepts male and female students from grades seven to 12. NYMA stresses good citizenship and has high expectations of its students. It utilizes a structured JROTC curriculum, subjecting students to Army rituals such as morning dorm and uniform inspections, but it also maintains rigorous academic standards. NYMA does not offer a short-term boot camp program, but parents can enroll a student for a semester to get them back on track.

Adirondack Leadership

Wilderness programs get teens on the right path. Adirondack Leadership is a wilderness camp in New York for troubled teens ages 13 to 17. The program seeks to aid in emotional growth and restoring teenagers' ability to make good decisions and function in their daily lives. Students in the program spend a portion of their day engaged in outdoor group activities--such as camping and hiking--and receive individual counseling.

Hope for Teens

Hope for Teens offers spiritual guidance. Hope for Teens is an alternative to typical "tough love" boot camps for troubled youth, stressing spiritual and emotional guidance. Hope for teens accepts children of all ages from Christian families. Hope for Teens operates year-round and works individually with families to plan how long their troubled youth needs to stay in the program.

The Family Foundation School

The Family Foundation School offers teens the support they need. The Family Foundation School is a therapeutic boarding school that operates under the principles of standard 12-step programs. The program is designed for students to spend at least 18 months on campus, where they go through experiential and individual therapy and a full academic program. Students are taught to support one another, and learn how to deal with addictions or emotional problems and how to function when they return home.
