How to Help My Son Focus in School

Every parent wants her son to do well in his school work. If he takes in valuable information at school, he will become a more well-rounded individual. Some children, however, have trouble staying focused in school. Instead of listening to his teacher's lecture, he may daydream or draw in his notebook. At home, he may choose to watch television instead of doing his homework. As a parent, you must help your son focus in school.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your son's teacher about strategies to keep your son focused. Ask her to have your son sit in an area where he will not be distracted. If he sits by a talkative friend, an open door or a class pet, he may lose focus during his teacher's lecture. Encourage her to say your son's name before she addresses him, so he is aware that he is about to be asked a question or given information. Frequent eye contact is also important in keeping your son's focus. Ask his teacher to emphasize details or instructions by speaking loudly and repeating words. (See Reference 2.)

    • 2

Check his homework every night. This will ensure that he is completing his homework and is making an effort to understand what he is learning. To confirm that he understands what he is learning, ask him to write a few sentences about what he learned while he was completing his homework assignment. (See Reference 1.)

    • 3

Use puzzles and strategy games to teach your son to focus. These activities require concentration and will teach your son to focus on one subject and have fun at the same time. The skills he will learn in this enjoyable situation will transfer to the classroom and increase his chances of listening attentively. (See Reference 2.)

    • 4

Show him how to take proper notes. Instead of trying to write down every word the teacher says, teach him how to write only the main ideas in his own words. Taking notes will also help him absorb information better than if he were not taking any notes. (See Reference 2.)

    • 5

Encourage your son to play in nature. Children who play outside may be able to focus more on their school work. Before your son does his homework, let him run around with your dog outside or play a game of basketball with his friends. (See Reference 3.)
