Effects of Being Bullied

Bullying is intentionally hurting a person by name calling, spreading rumors, sabotaging relationships and physical abuse. Bullying is not an isolated incident. It occurs when a bully commits the above acts repeatedly. It can happen to anyone, at any age, but it is most common in school-age children. Bullying has both short- and long-term effects on the victim.

  1. Embarrassment

    • Bullying can occur in private, on the phone, on the Internet or in public. Public bullying is likely to cause embarrassment, though any kind of bullying can have this effect. The victim feels embarrassed or ashamed because of the things the bully is saying, because there are witnesses to his victimization or because he is physically unable to restrain attacks from the bully. This is one of the immediate effects of bullying.

    Low Self Esteem

    • According to the Berkshire District Attorney's website, victims of bullying are more likely to suffer from low self esteem. They think less of themselves mentally and physically. If bullies call them ugly or stupid, they may start to think that about themselves. Low self esteem can lead to mental, social and academic problems.

    Academic Problems

    • Roughly 160,000 students miss school daily, hoping to avoid bullying. Ninety percent of children who are victims of bullying do not tell adults about it. These children may have worse grades than their peers who are not victims of bullying. Because many of them do not report it, parents and teachers must watch for signs of bullying in children whose grades and attendance are dropping.

    Social Problems

    • Peers who have seen the bullying may ostracize victims of bullies. Other students may think that the victims are not "cool" because the typically more popular bullies attack them. This can lead to victims having fewer friends. It can also lead to the victims wanting fewer friends and generally disliking social activities.

    Mental and Emotional Problems

    • Depression, anxiety, loneliness, sleep disturbances and eating disorders can arise because of bullying. These negative mental and emotional problems may even stay with bullying victims into adulthood. Unfortunately, they may also lead to behavioral problems that destroy the lives of the victims and those around them.

    Suicide and Homicide

    • Suicidal thoughts are common among bullying victims. Even into adulthood, bullying victims are three times more susceptible to suicidal thoughts. It is currently unclear whether bullying makes victims more likely to commit suicide, but "...there's a likely association," according to Young-Shin Kim, M.D. However, there is a clear link between bullying and homicide. Of all the perpetrators of school shootings in the 1990s, 12 out of 15 of them were victims of bullies.
