How to Get Children to Communicate

Children naturally seem to assume that you are going to know everything they want or how they're feeling without them having to communicate with you. As all parents know, this can lead to a lot of frustration. The best thing you can do is teach children to communicate with you in an effective manner. If you follow these steps you should soon be well on the way.

Instructions

    • 1

Let your children know that they can come and talk to you about anything. Tell them that you will not judge them even if it directly contradicts your beliefs.

    • 2

Hang things on the refrigerator or wall that express how you feel about things and encourage them to do the same. If a poem really touched you, hang it up.

    • 3

Explain things to your children they may not understand. If you don't know the answer, tell them and offer to help find it.

    • 4

Accept your children's opinion and don't act like your opinion is the only one that matters. Parents may sometimes do this unintentionally. Value and encourage them to offer their opinions.

    • 5

Encourage your children to join you in making decisions. This helps them to understand that their decisions and opinions are valued and they will be more likely to communicate with you.

    • 6

Remind your children that you love them unconditionally. As long as they know they are loved and valued, they will be more likely to talk and share their feelings with you because of your unconditional love.
