How to Support the Intellectual Development of a Child
Your child's mind is arguably her most precious resource. Unfortunately, many schools simply don't do enough to encourage intellectual development and creative growth. With the right attitude and a little know-how, however, you can take over where your child's school left off and give her the best shot at academic, social, professional and personal success.
Instructions
Encourage your child to pursue what he's passionate about. Whether it's baseball or biology, allowing your child full access to his topic of interest promotes overall intellectual and emotional growth. Answer your child's questions when you can, even if they're annoying. As they grow older, many children lose their curiosity, which limits their ability to reason and find answers to tough, complicated questions. Make sure your child eats well, stays active and gets proper amounts of sleep. Physical health is an important, if not critical part of mental development, especially in young children. Provide your child the opportunity to learn a musical instrument or practice some form of fine or performing art. The arts give your child an outlet for creative and emotional expression that she doesn't have in a traditional classroom setting. Supply your child with as much reading material as he needs. Many kids actually like reading, but they don't know how to get books they would like to read. Consider making a weekly trip to the library or local bookstore to keep your child motivated and enthusiastic about reading.
