How to Find Fun and Creative Ways to Teach Your Child Math

Help your child learn his numbers by using food items to show him math. Kids love using cereal such as Fruit Loops, Cheerios, and Cookie Crisp to learn how to count numbers. You can even teach children how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using food items. If you want to teach your child math using healthier foods, try math with fruit snacks, pieces of apples, grapes, blueberries, or even carrot sticks. Have your child solve math problems by counting food items or adding and taking away food items for addition and subtraction. Allow your child to eat the food items during math lessons to encourage him to enjoy numbers more.

Take your child outside and practice math using outdoor items such as rocks, the clouds, pieces of grass, or even sticks. Find fun outdoor objects to help your child learn math and numbers. Allow your child to find the things that interest him most so that he is more willing to try a math lesson. When you make math fun by taking kids outdoors to learn, they are less stressed during the learning process. Plus, you'll be giving your child some much needed fresh air. You can even have your child count houses you pass in the car, children playing outside, mailboxes on the road, or letters on a sign. Have your child use his toys for learning math lessons. Let your child bring out his Matchbox cars and add and subtract them. He can even crash them and pretend they are broken for subtraction lessons, then bring them back into the race for additions problems. Get creative and encourage your child to learn math with different toys that he has. Ask him to hide his favorite toys for learning subtraction or division. Have him bring the toys back in sight for addition or multiplication math problems. Your child will love learning with toys he has and you just might encourage him to do math more often since it will be fun for him to do.

Teach your child math with playing cards, Uno game cards, or Go Fish cards. Find cards that have numbers on them to help your child understand counting and math. When he can see the whole number in front of him, he will be more apt to understand learning in terms of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of these numbers. For example, if you have a 2 of spades and a 4 of hearts, have your child count all the shapes on each card to help him understand that 2 + 4 = 6. He'll not only see how many shapes each number has, but he'll also understand that the number itself + another number = the final number.

Help your child understand math concepts by using money. Teaching children math using coins can help them learn how to add, subtract, multiply, divide and learn to count money. You can use the coins to teach your child how to count change and learn math concepts at the same time. Kids love money and using coins to solve math problems will make learning fun for children. Plus, you could choose to put the money into your child's piggy bank for him to save and understand the concept of earning money. Allow your child to earn money for learning math concepts so that he gets a feel that money must be earned by doing something to obtain it. He'll started to see that math can be fun, and he'll also learn that money 'does not grow on trees'.
