How to Talk to Kids About the Birds & Bees

There are many young parents out there right now dreading that first talk with their kids about the birds and the bees. But as difficult as it may seem, it's really not that bad. If you are open with your kids about sex, you will know that they are ready to grow up with the right knowledge and the right attitude. An open relationship with your kids is a healthy relationship for both of you.

      Talk to your kid gradually about sex. It doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be, one big talk. For example, you can help your kid to understand the differences in body parts long before you explain the act of intercourse to them.

      Follow your own time table. You know your kid better than anyone, so you should be the one to decide when they are ready to learn about sex.

      Approach the subject as a team. If you have a boy, that doesn't mean you need to be the father to talk to him about sex. Both parents or guardians working together can create an environment where a kid has multiple people with whom they are comfortable confiding in.

      Create an environment that is question-friendly. Give your kid a chance to talk, listen to what they have to say, and never make them feel foolish for asking anything.

      Tie in the biological aspects and the emotional aspects of the subject in the same conversation. If you present them as two separate things, your kid may learn to think of them as two separate things.

      Explain the dangers without making sex as a whole seem scary. There's a fine line between a child understanding that they shouldn't have sex at too young of an age and them thinking that sex is altogether "bad" or "wrong."

      Be honest with your kids. Don't just sound like you're reading from a book. You are their role model, so let them know what you actually feel about the subject you are discussing with them.
