Rosary Activities for Children
Children are able to grasp easily the concepts with which they have hands-on experience. When teaching them to pray the rosary, it is possible to make the experience an engaging one by using various activities. Whether it is coloring, singing, crafting or actually reciting the prayer, it is important that parents sit by their children and through casual conversation, draw attention to the importance of prayer.

Singing Activity
-
Music is an easy way to help children learn and the rosary prayer is no exception. Use songs about the mysteries of the rosary such as those by musician Danielle Rose. Play these songs often in the background. Even as your child is busy playing inside the house, she will pick up the words without her knowledge. After a few days, teach your child the exact words and tone, and make a practice of singing together. Explore more about each mystery from books at your local bookstore.
Saying the Prayer
-
Teach your child to say the prayer correctly by repeating after you a few times. Then ask him to try saying it on his own. Explain that he can pray the rosary to show gratitude for all that God does for us. Make a routine of saying this prayer daily at bedtime or some other time when the child is peaceful. If she makes a mistake somewhere, do not jump in to correct it -- let her complete reciting it and then, gradually draw her attention to what she needs to change the next time.
Coloring Books
-
Check your local bookstore for books with coloring activities on the rosary prayer. Use coloring books such as those available on the Domestic Church website (see Resources). Working with pictures that depict the different mysteries helps to reinforce the concept and the words of the prayer in your child's mind. Allow your child to work at coloring these pictures and provide positive inputs about her creations. Put up these pictures in her room so she gets to look at them often and is spontaneously reminded of the prayer.
Word Search Puzzles
-
With an older child who recognizes spellings, use word search puzzles that cover the words in the rosary prayer. These puzzles are available both with and without word lists, and are an appealing way of drawing the child's attention to the actual words in the prayer. Download such puzzles from websites such as Resources for Catholic Educators (see Resources) or create your own. Sit with your child as he identifies the words and help him perfect his pronunciation of these words.
