How to Sew a Contour Diaper
Sewing homemade contour diapers is a wise way to save money on baby supplies. Buying disposable diapers can cost you hundreds of dollars a month. In fact, according to Diaper Decision, a new parent will likely spend over $2500 on disposable diapers in the first 48 weeks of a baby's life. Making cloth diapers also helps the environment by creating a product that will be used on a repeated basis.

Instructions
Measure the size of your baby's waist. Add eight inches to the initial measurement to ensure the front flaps of the diaper overlap and fit comfortably around the child. Say, for example, the child's waist is 13 inches in circumference. The adjusted measurement is now 19 inches. Draw the outline of the contour diaper onto a piece of cotton cloth using standard chalk. The shape of the diaper should resemble a large, block letter "T" shape. Make the diaper at least 4 inches wide for the horizontal and vertical strip. Make the vertical strip at least 12 inches long. Search online for free diaper and sewing patterns. Cut out the shape of the diaper along the trace lines with fabric scissors. Repeat steps two and three at least three additional times to give your diaper cushion and stability reinforcement. Trim any free hanging fibers from the edges of the diaper layers with pinking shears. Place each diaper sheet one atop the other. Sew the perimeter of the sheets together using a cross stitch pattern with a 1/8-inch seam allowance. A cross stitch pattern gives the diaper a durable bond to withstand multiple washings. Lay your baby down with the small of his back at the cross point between the horizontal and vertical diaper flaps. Pull the 12-inch vertical flap up between the baby's legs. Wrap the horizontal flaps around the waist of the baby. Pin the diaper into place with baby pins.
