Children's Books About Seas
With so many ocean topics and themes to explore, you'd be hard-pressed not to find a children's book about the sea to read to or with your kids. From magical tales of mermaids or talking fish to fascinating facts on the deadliest sea creatures, look for books about the sea that are appropriate for your child's age and interests.

General Sea Books

For a basic introduction to the oceans, check out "Oceans: The Vast, Mysterious Deep," by David L. Harrison," for children ages 5 and older, which teaches children about the ocean habitat, including its many trenches, volcanoes and tumultuous weather patterns. For kids ages 6 and older, "Oceans," by Seymour Simon, provides a more detailed, educational look at all of the seas and features stunning, full-page photographs. Also from the same author, "Seymour Simon's Extreme Oceans," for kids ages 9 and older, looks at the most exciting, extreme and dangerous aspects of the Earth's oceans.

Read about mammals, fish and other sea life with your kids. For children ages 4 and older, "Ocean of Animals," by Janine Scott, introduces younger children to whales, sharks, crustaceans and sea plants. For kids ages 7 and older, check out "Children's Guide to Sea Creatures, " by Jinny Johnson, an encyclopedia-style book features pictures and facts on a variety of sea life. Kids 10 and older might enjoy "Weird Sea Creatures," by Erich Hoyt, which highlights the most bizarre and strange-looking ocean creatures.

For kids ages 4 and older, the book "I Can Save the Ocean!" by Alison Inches, follows a little green monster who learns how easily trash gets into the ocean when it is not disposed of properly. For kids ages 8 and older, "Oceans Under Threat," by Paul Mason, gives kids a serious look at the effects of pollution on the ocean, including diminishing coral reefs and endangered species. Another book to check out, for kids ages 10 and older, is "Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam and the Science of Ocean Motion," by Loree Griffin Burns, which details the true account of a group of scientists monitoring the gigantic mass of trash that has made its way into the oceans.

Read exciting fiction books that have a focus on oceans or sea life. One book to consider for kids ages 4 and older is "Harry by the Sea," by Gene Zion, a humorous story about a little dog visiting the seashore and is thought to be a sea serpent when he goes into the water. Another book to check out, for kids ages 8 and older, is "The Young Man and The Sea," by Rodman Philbrick, a tale about a boy who is on a quest to catch bluefin tuna from the sea in order to take care of himself and his father after his mother dies. For kids 9 and older, have them read the classic, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," by Jules Verne, which follows the adventures of Captain Nemo and his crew on his submarine far below the ocean's surface.
