St. Patrick's Day Songs & Chants for Kids

St. Patrick's Day is an Irish cultural and religious holiday celebrated each year on March 17. Modern interpretations of the holiday feature the color green, shamrocks, leprechauns and pots of gold at the end of rainbows. To celebrate this day with children, have them dress in green clothes, play fun games and sing silly songs.

  1. The Leprechaun Fingerplay

    • A leprechaun is small and green.
(Use your hand to indicate a small person.)
He hides where he cannot be seen.
(Cover your eyes with your hands.)
But if you catch one on this day,
(Wave your finger back and forth.)
He must give his gold away!
(Pretend to put a handful of gold in your pocket.)

    Five Green Shamrocks

    • Five green shamrocks growing outdoors,
(Child's name) picked one, and that left four.

Four little shamrocks, green as they can be,
(Child's name) picked one and that left three.

      Three little shamrocks playing peek-a-boo,
(Child's name) picked one and that left two.

Two little shamrocks nodding in the sun,
(Child's name) picked one, and that left one.

One little shamrock for St. Patrick's Day fun,
(Child's name) picked that one, and that left none.

    Leprechauns Are Dancing

    • Sing this song to the tune of, "Sing a Song of Sixpence."

      Leprechauns are dancing,
Oh, how they love to play!
      Running in the fields and
      Playing tricks all day!
      You will never catch one,
      No matter what you do.
They sing and dance and play their games,
      And run away from you!

    Leprechaun Stew

    • Leprechaun stew, leprechaun stew,
      If I don't get some,
      I don't know what I'll do.

Give away my pot of gold.
      Give away my shoe.
But don't give away my leprechaun stew!

    This Little Leprechaun

    • Sing to the tune of, "This Old Man."

      This little leprechaun,
      He hid one.
He hid gold in the noonday sun. WHEW!
With a tap, tap, paddy whack,
      Hide a pot of gold.
      It̵7;s a secret that can̵7;t be told.

Continue counting up to 10; replacing the third line with each of the following lines:

Two -- He hid gold in his left shoe. OUCH!
Three -- He hid gold in the deep blue sea. AHOY!
Four -- He hid gold behind the door. BANG!
Five -- He hid gold in the old beehive. BUZZ!
Six -- He hid gold and played some tricks. GOTCHA!
Seven -- He hid gold beneath the bed. THAT DOESN̵7;T RHYME!
Eight -- He hid gold near the garden gate. SQUEAK!
Nine -- He hid gold in the nick of time. TICK, TOCK!
Ten -- He hid gold in the old pig pen. OINK!
