How to Introduce a Child to Religion

Children are naturally inquisitive. Answering relatively simple questions can be done based on your knowledge or with a little research. However, what are you to do when your child asks questions that don't have quantifiable answers, such as those related to religion?

Things You'll Need

  • Religious books

Instructions

    • 1

Offer your child a definition of the words "spirituality" and "faith." Explain that religion is a means to celebrate these two elements. Point out that people have different beliefs and that different religions offer a means to celebrate those varied beliefs.

    • 2

Introduce your child to the literature that is associated with religions: the Bible for Christianity, the Torah for Judaism and the Quran for Islam, for example. Inform your child that these books of scripture are a part of the foundation of different religions and that they guide those who follow those religions.

    • 3

Share children's books related to religion with your child. Children's books that are geared toward a child will make it easier for your little one to understand the concept of religion. Examples of books to use include "One World, Many Religions: The Ways We Worship," by Mary Pope Osborne, "The Kids Book of World Religions," by Jennifer Glossop, and "What is God," by Etan Boritzer.

    • 4

Discuss the customs that various religions practice. Explain why these customs are practiced and why they are important. Those customs can include holidays that are celebrated, and religious customs that are practiced in places of worship and the home.

    • 5

Take your child to houses of worship. Point out that houses of worship are places that welcome people to celebrate their faith. Explain that the customs associated with a particular religion are practiced within that religion's place of worship.
