Thunderstorm Activities for Children

Many children are afraid of thunderstorms. But if you're safely indoors, there's no reason to be afraid of thunder and lightning. There are plenty of activities children can enjoy in thunderstorms, both indoor games that are fun on any rainy day and activities that will help them understand and enjoy the storm.

  1. Fun Indoor Activities

    • Any indoor activity can be adopted for use during a thunderstorm. Try doing artwork by drawing pictures of the thunderstorm clouds or the raindrops on the windows. Listen to music and turn it up louder than the storm. Read a book about storms, such as "Eye of the Storm" by Stephen Kramer, which chronicles the story of storm chaser and photographer Warren Faidley.

    Scientific Storm Activities

    • Children can also enjoy activities that teach them about thunderstorms. The most popular of these, which can only be done during a storm, is calculating how far the storm is from you, which you can do by counting the seconds from when the lightning strikes to when you hear the thunder. For every five seconds between them, the storm is one mile away.

Another activity that will teach children about lightning is to turn off all the lights and eat Life Savers mints in front of a mirror. Chewing causes the sugar in the candy to release a small electrical charge, which attracts the nitrogen in the air and creates a small electrical spark. If you look in the mirror while eating the mints, you will see the sparks in your mouth, a small version of the lightning you're seeing outside.
