Craft Activities for 5-Year-Olds
Now that school is over and children are home or at day-care, parents and educators are looking for activities that they can do with 5 year olds that are not only fun and entertaining but possibly educational as well. These are a few crafts that are inexpensive, easy and fun for adults and children to do together.

Life-size Paper Dolls
-
For this activity, a large piece of butcher paper, a marker or marking pen, colored construction or any other kind of decorative paper and glue are needed. Have the children lie flat on the butcher paper and make sure their bodies fit---there should be a sizable margin on both sides. Trace around each child's body with the pen and have the child stand up, being careful not to rip the paper. The outline can be dressed and decorated in a variety of ways to make a lovely paper doll.
Planting seeds and Decorating Flower Pots
-
This is an activity that is educational and fun, either as a group project or something to do at home. All that is required are small clay flower pots, paint, brushes or sponges, potting soil and seeds. Have children paint and decorate the pot in any manner they desire. Once the pot dries, let them pour in the soil and plant and water the seeds. Children have great fun watching their plant grow, and they learn about seeds and plants in general.
Making Tie-Dyed T-Shirts
-
Making Tie-Dyed T-shirts is not only a fun activity for adults and children, but it is also a way to transform or rejuvenate faded or stained clothing. All that is needed is a light T-shirt, fabric dye, salt, a bucket or a large container and several rubber bands. Follow the instructions on the dye packet to make the dye---some directions require boiled water but many dyes work with cold water. Let children wrap the rubber bands around the shirt in any pattern they desire and choose one or many colors. Allow the shirt to dry and then remove the rubber bands. Children now have a "new" T-shirt that they helped to create themselves.
Note: Do this activity outdoors if you can. Dye that spills or drips can be very hard to get off of kitchen floors.

Many children turn out at costumed events and holidays in assembly-line costumes bought from a retailer. Though making a costume at home can be daunting, creating an animal-themed one, such as a skunk, is fairly easy. Black pants and a black shirt wi
