Easy Sewing Projects for Kids

Few children’s activities result in the level of pride and satisfaction as sewing. Learning to use a sewing machine, while sometimes intimidating, can open new doors of creativity for kids. It is critical, when teaching a child to sew, to focus on easy projects that will be successful. Projects should have few pieces and straight seams. Felt and fleece fabrics are perfect choices for projects that will have exposed seams, since these fabrics do not ravel.

  1. Lounge Pillow

    • Kids will love a large, comfortable pillow for watching TV on the floor or lounging around with friends. Each pillow requires two squares of cotton fabric, 24 inches by 24 inches, and pillow stuffing. The squares are sewn wrong-sides together, leaving a four-inch unsewn gap in the seam. The pillow is then turned right-side out through the gap, and is stuffed. Finish the pillow by sewing the gap closed.

    Tote Bag

    • A basic tote bag with two straps is the perfect holder for craft projects, books, or clothes for a sleepover. Each child will need two pieces of felt, 14 inches by 14 inches, and four feet of one-inch wide ribbon or strapping. Cut the ribbon or strapping into two equal pieces to make the bag handles. Each handle is sewn onto one edge of each square of fabric, with the ends sewn down securely about six inches apart and one inch from the top edge of the fabric. The bag shape is sewn by stitching the two pieces of felt together on the other three sides, leaving the last side open for the top of the bag.

    Superhero Cape

    • Teach children how to make casings with a simple cape that can be worn for Halloween or playtime. Each child will need a piece of thin fleece, 2 ½ feet wide by 2 ½ feet long, and a three-feet-long piece of one-inch ribbon. The casing is made along one edge, by folding the fleece 1 ½ inches down the wrong side of the fabric. The seam is sewn ½ inch from the edge, creating a one-inch casing that is open on both ends. Thread the ribbon through the casing, and gather the fleece so that the ribbon can be tied around the neck, creating a full cape that falls over the shoulders or can be shifted to the back.
